History of Raghopur (Kotigram)
Raghopur, now a fertile river island in Vaishali, Bihar, holds historical roots tracing back to the Harappan era. According to the Bihar Government Gazette, Raghopur was once known as Kotigram.
In 2017, archaeologists discovered massive bricks with a ratio of 1:2:4 beneath farms in Raghopur — an exact match to construction techniques from the Indus Valley Civilization. These were found during road digging and flood protection work.
Being positioned between Chechar (ancient Mithila) and Didarganj, Raghopur likely served as a strategic settlement during ancient trade routes along the Ganga. Today, it's surrounded entirely by the river and remains rich in both culture and agriculture.
- Old Name: Kotigram
- Location: Island between Ganga in Vaishali district
- Cultural Significance: Known for Chhath Puja, ancient farming traditions
- Modern Role: Part of Bihar's flood-prone fertile belt
“Raghopur is not just a village; it's a chapter of civilization written on the banks of the Ganga.”
